Anyone else sick of hearing the phrase New Year, New You?

Hands up if you're ready for 2016 : How I am planning my year to be full of energy and simplicity

I never really liked the idea of having a word for the year. To be honest I always came up with way too many to narrow it down to just one. However, last week while we were hanging out at my sister’s place in Brisbane for a bit of a relax, it came to me. As most of you know I’ve had very little sleep since Elsie arrived almost 2 years ago…yeah guys she’s 2 tomorrow! Going on 22! Laying on the couch watching Nashville and seeing how amazing these country singers were and how much they were doing in a day (I know it’s TV and not real but I was inspired) I decided what I wanted to focus on in 2016. Sorry guys, I’m not going to release my first country album (however that would be fun!) I’m going to figure out how to get my energy levels up. My word is Energise. Everything I do I am going to check in and ask :

“Will this activity/food/relationship/etc improve or deflate my energy?” I am always amazed by how much energy my husband Harry has. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him say he’s tired! He is the Energy Guru…I want that to be me!

My yoga practice is the constant that has helped me navigate life’s ups and downs the last 15 years and it’s kept me sane and alive since becoming a Mum. More than ever before my yoga practice is about tapping into the infinite energy within and getting it moving freely around my body so I can be at my best. Without it, gosh I don’t even want to think about that. We’ve got some amazing visiting teachers coming to the studio this year (David Keil, Mark Robberds and Santina Giardina-Chard) and I am really excited to study under them and practice next to you all when they are here. I am excited about my practice for the first time in ages – one of the reasons I bring the best teachers here to us is so that I can be a student, which is actually all I really want to do. For me to be at my best to help you, I need to continually learn from my teachers, recharge my practice and delve a little deeper into my own spiritual adventure.

Because I struggle to have just one word I’ve got another one.  It’s kind of like a subheading. It’s Simplify. I think in order to have more energy the key is to simplify everything. After a very trying time many years ago I decided I would have an uncomplicated life and I do. But I want more. Or should I say less! Who doesn’t want an simple, free-flowing life. Don’t get me wrong I love to work hard and this isn’t about putting my feet up and watching from the sidelines – what I’m after is a life lived on purpose every day. I don’t have the time or the interest for relationships/work/things/activities that don’t fill me with joy and inspiration.

There are three books I’m reading to help me and they are:

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up – I’ve read this before and LOVED it so I’m reading it again. This isn’t a just book about tidying up, it’s about creating order.

Exhausted to Energised – I got this book last month and have just started to get into it.  A lot of it I already know from living with the energy Guru, Harry, but it’s good to read from a different angle.

Better than Before – I just picked this up on holidays and I can’t put it down. I love Gretchen Rubin and her fascinating insights into habits and self control.

I never make new year’s resolutions as they just don’t work for me. What I have done every year since 2001 is figure out how I want to feel and then write down action steps to get me there regardless of the time of year.

I don’t cut anything out. I just go after the things I want instead. That way I don’t have time or room for the stuff that doesn’t serve me.

So here’s to the best year yet together on and off the mat.  Let’s be brave and command a life that is full of energy, simplicity and fun!
